A taste of success

“If someone asked me the question, ‘What is the best way to get started as a remote broadcast engineer?’ my answer would be definite and immediate. I would tell them to go to NEP Broadcasting. In January of 2007 I discovered NEP and walked into their doors to start a journey as a Mobile Unit Engineer Apprentice. NEP’s Apprentice program provided me with the opportunity to be a part of the biggest shows on TV, work with the most advanced equipment in the television industry, and learn that equipment from the best engineers in the country. The knowledge, experience, and attitude of the staff at NEP provided a perfect environment for me to not only learn, but also thrive. That environment is one that I feel privileged to be a part of today and excited to carry on into the future.” -Apprentice Graduate and Current NEP Mobile Unit Engineer

“When I first interviewed, and received a tour of NEP I thought that there was no way I was going to be able to be an engineer. There was so much to learn, but by the time I graduated in 2008 from the apprentice program I was completely confident and learned all the basics to be a good engineer. Because of the apprentice program I now have a career instead of a job! I already lived in Pittsburgh, but it is nice to have the freedom to move anywhere in the continental U.S. and not have to worry about finding a new job. Working for NEP has been the best career move I have made.” -Apprentice Graduate and Current NEP Mobile Unit Engineer

“While the apprentice program has a loose curriculum and a clear direction, you get out of it what you put into it. Essentially it surrounds you with challenges and the resources to complete them. While I moved through the program I was presented with simple tasks at first, like making cable with tough quality checks and rigorous repetition, and then moved onto putting together systems. Everyone is a resource, and whether I was doing component level repair on an audio console or building a support truck with little direction, the program emphasizes utilizing your individual skills and then knowing when it's time to ask for help. When I started to go out on the road I was not only confident about engineering our units because of my direct experience maintaining and building them, but I had honed my information gathering and troubleshooting skills to keep growing as an engineer when problems arose.” -Apprentice Graduate and Current NEP Mobile Unit Engineer

"Being an apprentice at NEP has not only given me technical skills, but it has also given me valuable life skills. One very important lesson that I learned while being an apprentice was to never be closed minded, but to take a step back and to look at everything as a whole. I have been given the privilege and opportunity to work with and learn from some of my greatest idols and mentors while working at NEP. I am also extremely fortunate and thankful to only be 22 years old with a career and a long exciting future ahead of me. Each and every day, I look forward to a job that provides a changing, exciting, and educational environment." -Apprentice Graduate and Current NEP Mobile Unit Engineer
