Duncan Smith started work as a 35mm Feature Film Assistant Editor for National Screen Services, a London base cinema trailer production company. Working for Television South PLC (TVS) a major UK television franchise he progressed through film and video tape post production leaving as a Senior Post Production Editor.
As Head of Post Production for London News Network in the 1990s he was a key member of the delivery team pioneering new News and Magazine programming for London. This included training and delivery of editing, camera acquisition, broadcast links, and multi-skilling across the technical grades.
Head hunted by Planet 24 Productions makers of the Big Breakfast as Post Production Manager Duncan designed and built digital post production facilities covering 4,000sq feet in addition to overseeing all Planet 24’s network post production on a profit, loss and quality basis.
As Director of Facilities at Nats Post Production in Soho, London, Duncan managed a team of seventy creative and facility staff, numerous freelance operators, and 24 hour running of forty five operational suites and the associated infrastructure.
Duncan moved to Bow Tie Television Limited in 2004 establishing the business as a serious credible competitor to the larger, longer established OB providers, winning and successfully delivering a prestigious Sky contract. He was responsible for the technical solutions, proposals, and quotations, as well as leading in the negotiation of all jobs and contracts.
Since the sale of Bow Tie Television to NEP in 2012 as Managing Director Duncan has improved service levels for existing clients and generated new business opportunities including a major software development build for the video delivery solution for UK Parliament. He has also devised, sold and successfully delivered a number of bespoke broadcast file based work flow, media asset management, and video delivery solutions for authorities and corporate clients in the UK. Duncan has given Bow Tie Television a clear brand identity, robust internal systems, and clear communications channels, with a proactive motivated management team and dedicated staff.
Duncan is known throughout the industry as someone who gets things done, “a completer”. He is a multi-tasker capable of adapting to a wide variety of work situations. He enjoys working with clients and the staff as well as solving complex technical puzzles, and setting up and overseeing the support systems that enable delegation and facilitate growth. He is quick to understand the functionality and benefits of technology (as it constantly develops), and most importantly has the ability to demystify and convert this where necessary into concise confidence building client friendly information.
Throughout his career Duncan has used his people skills to build long term collaborative trust based working relationships for the benefit of the business, clients, and the operational teams.
