Work with American Idol set designers to create a visually interesting set, dominated by video display, using a mix of projection, projection mapping and LED.
Utilizing a mix of 35k, 18k and 16k projectors, across 8 zones to create a uniform light level, a grid is created and projectors aligned across the zones to match up. Each zone contains a mix of hard elements over multiple planes as well as “open” boxes with rear screen material. Internal WARP is used to form to the irregular pieces. A Pandora media server does the final alignment and warping, creating a perfect image. The projection display is complimented by two main LED walls, a 6 millimeter set piece broken into five pieces (the moving Idol stage entrance) and a 12 millimeter screen. There are an additional 12 smaller LED walls creating depth and dimension within the set.
By carefully aligning the projected virtual content with the physical objects, a stunning variety of effects are accomplished. The video is commonly combined with, or triggered by, audio to create an audio-visual narrative. Working with the latest in projection and LED equipment provided by Sweetwater, Idol’s set designers leverage projection mapping, complimented by LED, to create a dynamic video display of 2D and 3D images that connect with audiences in a new and exciting way.
